Unit 1 Booklet

Homestudy

Task 1 - Enterprise
Identify the main characteristics of an entrepreneur and say how these are linked to their success. Then explain the importance of each and relate this to specific entrepreneurs of your choice.

Task 2 - Business Activities
The core business activity is the one that is most important or where the business has the most experience, and is usually the most profitable for the business.

Identify the main features of Sainsbury's and Thorpe Park's business activities then point out any similarities and differences.

Task 3 - Diversification

To diversify means to do new and different business activities. Examples of businesses that have diversified include:
  • Dixons, which has replaced its town centre stores with an online store to sell electrical and electronic goods more cheaply.
  • HMV (which also owns Waterstones), which has introduced new technology products, boosted sales of computer games and converted stores to include social hubs and entertainment areas to meet competitive challenges from supermarkets and Amazon, which offer discounted CDs, DVDs and books.
Firstly, define what DIVERSIFICATION means.
Secondly, Identify one business that has had to change its activities or diversify to remain competitive. Find out why this change occurred and whether the change has been a good idea or not.

Task 4 - Aims
Most businesses aim to make profits. Some businesses try to make as much profit as possible. They are known as Profit Maximisers. Others just try to make a satisfactory profit. The choice will depend on the views of the owners of the business, e.g. Tesco.

Describe at least 5 major possible business aims that every business adopts. Using the information, make a judgement on the importance of each aim.

Task 5 - Ownership
Tesco is currently worth 290.80p per share (June 2014) on the London Stock Market.
